Guests were able to see Burn’s Revolutionary Cooking Appliances  live in action – including the Electric Stoves, Charcoal Stoves and grills, Wood and Briquette Stoves as they enjoyed drinks and bites being prepared on the stoves.

Flavia Howard, NCN’s Co-founder, welcomed the guests and talked about how the clean cooking Industry cuts across multiple impact areas such energy, health, pollution and climate – but yet it often gets overlooked.

Molly Brown, Burn’s Head of Carbon Strategy, presented some additional context to the clean cooking challenge. Approximately 2.4 billion individuals worldwide rely on biomass as their primary cooking fuel, with 950 million of them located in Sub-Saharan Africa. Heavy dependence on biomass is the second leading contributor to deforestation in Africa, with approximately 80% of the charcoal used in the continent sourced unsustainably (BURN 2023) . As a consequence, cooking fuel use contributes  to roughly 3% of global CO2 emissions – on par with the aviation industry!

Simon Kiragu, Programme Manager at the Clean Cooking Association of Kenya, highlighted the success and growing acceptance of the Clean Cooking Industry over the past few years. During the recently concluded Clean Cooking Week, CCAK introduced the “Women in Clean Cooking Initiative” to encourage greater participation of women in the clean cooking value chain as entrepreneurs, producers, distributors, and policymakers, thereby contributing significantly to the widespread adoption of clean cooking solutions.

Burn has been an early supporter – and now sponsor – of the Nairobi Climate Network and we were thrilled to co-host this event with them. Thank you, Burn team, and thanks to our wonderful members for braving the rain and joining us!
